Contrast one Decade to Another Decade
It is no doubt that the life in the 2000s was way different from the kind of life the earlier population lived, likewise it is expected that future generation will have a very different life experience than any other past generation. Surviving through a decade inculcates the thought of being older, though good experiences make the ten years shorter than it can be realized, and with this trend in relation with the contrast existing between the 1990s and the 2000s, future generations would be better off with a lifestyle the same as the current, rather than experiencing what was known by the generation that lived in the 1990s. Generally, a decade is simply the duration of ten years, and what matters is not the numbers of years it got, but the experiences and the history established after those years.
The decade after the 1990s saw tremendous change in many global, political, economic, and social developments. To begin with, it is the technological advancement that is influenced by how time has changed, and so is the way of living. The 2000s’ children are the most affected by this phenomenon. While the 1990s’ children played games such as ‘Cut the Cake,’ ‘Lock and Key,’ among others, 2000s’ children have ‘Temple Run,’ ‘Candy Crush,’ ‘Fruit Ninja,’ and the ‘likes’ are the only things that define games to them, and no child would go five hundred meters beyond their house. Contrary to this, the 1990s was the era when holding a phone in hand was a big deal and would make the day of the children, and at school or when attempting their homework, they used pilot pens, ink pen, and ball pens (Selwyn and Facer 491). Most of children of 2000s own smart phones, as this is the only thing they need and will value at their seventh birthday. They are no longer associated with pen and paper, the only thing they are conversant with is downloading notes and emailing the homework to the teachers. The 2000s’ children do not go five hundred meters from the house, but miles to hang out in malls and to the movies in their cars. With these, anybody can only wish to be a child in the next decade.
As for the entertainment industry, it has significantly changed. Gone were the days of listening to the countdown on Fuse and boy bands that used sound effects and a lot of keyboards to make music. The 2000s’ generation gets their iTunes playlists updated in daily basis automatically. Guitars and other sophisticated and efficient instruments took over in the 2000s. Film industry got refurbished in the 2000s with the introduction of the 3D effects and glasses, giving the viewer the essence of being in the real movie scene. Cinemas are replaced by Cine Max and Fox Theatres, with analog transmission being a thing of the past in almost every part of the world in the late 2000s (Selwyn and Facer 491). With the better access to 4K resolution screens, digital and smart televisions in the 2000s, the entertainment industry took a breather of new life.
In addition, the ten years of 1990s were considered to favor Microsoft Inc. in terms of business enhancement and advancements. This included the spreading of its most popular Windows Operating Systems globally. Moreover, the desktop computers were produced in medium to large scale at the end of 1990s, and people started to consider the Windows as an essential part of office environments. Additionally, this technological advancement continued, and the internet received acceptance among common masses. This trend of strengthening of digital technology continued, and with the onset of 2000s, other players, such as Google, Apple, and Yahoo, entered the market (Powell 2337-2381). Furthermore, in the mid of 2000s, a new concept of social media started to gain popularity with many people considering many social networking sites as the way of interaction over the internet. This shift in interest towards the use of social media changed the dynamics of almost every aspect and domain of society, politics, and socio-economy (Lutz 186).
1990s were less colorful and deemed as simple years in fashion and lifestyle industries, and during this era, the physical involvement of people in active social events and entertainment activities such as watching movies in the theaters and attending sporting events were more frequent. The absence or minimal availability of mobile phones and other handheld devices increased the chances of people to interact with each other more proactively. In 2000s, the active social participation and occurrence of outdoor activities slowed down because of the availability of internet and frequent use of mobile phones. Children started to get their attention towards the computer based gaming instead of the physical games, and the lifestyle of people had changed in the 2000s drastically (Moss n.p.).
Though gifts were and are still given out even with the current generation, the type, value, and quantity of what is gifted have changed: for the children, Rs 11, Rs 21, or even chocolates in an envelope were considered valuable in the 1990s; 2000’s introduced the high life feeling of gifting. Expensive designer clothes, gadgets, and devices started being used with those not capable of purchasing such fancy kinds of stuff, opting not to give out gifts. Transport industries realized major improvement of fancy, comfortable, and much faster cars and automobiles than the decade before. Moreover, the trend is improving each day, owing to the continuous invention of powerful automobiles, operating on V12 engines.
However, the ten years of 2000s were characterized by a new wave of terrorism that had emerged. The end of 1990s saw the shifting of world politics towards a single super power’s influence and domination, as the Cold War era came to an end in favor of the USA. This did not auger well with everybody, with the Al Qaeda establishing a platform to oppose the America, leading to the establishment of what is currently termed as the terrorism (Lutz 186). The attacks on the American embassies by the terror group led to the declaration of war against terror globally. Better war armors launched in the 2000s were more sophisticated than the 1990s and greatly suppressed their movement.
A decade may seem long enough, but what makes it short are the events occurring. The illustration above is just a tip of what happened, excluding the establishment of cloud storing, more games other than football, and replacement of the encyclopedia by the Wikipedia. This paper has majorly contrasted between the 20th and the 21st centuries, which is the period when the humanity age entered another millennium (Powell 2350). This contrast is important in terms of understanding and exploring the difference between certain historical facts on the basis of global events and happenings that occurred during these 20 years. Improvement in lifestyle, medicinal health, and easy living are the main characters of this contrast, and from this, what the future decades hold for the human race remains a misery.
