Motivation

Motivation

Business organizations often use various ways to motivate their workers to increase production. Motivation can, therefore, be defined as the process of initiating, guiding, and maintaining behavior towards the achievement of a particular goal. The use of incentives is one of the common form motivations that many organizations use to improve the productivity of their employments.  The use of incentives involves giving financial rewards to employees based on their hard work.  Before receiving the incentives, the employees must prove their worth. The higher the productivity, the more financial rewards an employee receives.

Dan Pink, during his TED talk, criticized the use of incentives as a way of motivating employees and instead opted for the alternative approaches of motivating employees. According to Pink, motivation should aim at improving performance as well the creativity of the workers. The use of incentives, according to Pink, only promotes hard work with no improvement in creativity and performance. Employees perform worse when as they are interested in quantity rather than quality. The use of incentives is also a discriminatory way of motivating employees. Those whose works are never appreciated get demoralized since they feel their efforts are not recognized.

Other than incentives, organizations should use other motivation approaches other than incentives to motivate their employees. Some of the forms of motivations that companies can employ include commissions, bonuses, rewards, and reality shows. The use of rewards, for instance, helps in building a good relationship and trust between the employees and the management. The use of bonuses, on the other hand, motivates the employees to win.  Giving commission to the workers can also be used to motivate workers since the employees will work harder to meet the set target. Everybody is thus, motivated to achieve their goals as well as the organizational goal. These approaches will improve performance and creativity of the employees which is the primary objective of motivating workers.
